Buick Park Avenue HVAC Display Repair

When I originally purchased the Park Avenue the digital digital display for the HVAC controller was broken.  At that time I installed a new unit from the junk yard. Well the junk yard unit has started to act up. It will sometimes beep, change temperature on its own, or turn on by itself. I had kept the original unit with the broken digital display around and I decided to go ahead and try to repair the unit instead of purchasing another unit from the salvage yard.

The problem with these units is that the solder joints around the resistors crack. In my case it was obvious where the problem was located. The circuit board had a darker color around the resistors and the solder joints had a dull hollow appearance. I was able to resolder these connections and fix the digital display. When I touched what was left of the existing solder it flowed out. I then used some new additional solder. I'm not an expert in soldering, but I was able to do it.

This forum post and this youtube video show the process very well.
